How to Build SEO Strategies for your Business

So you keep hearing about this SEO thing. What is SEO and how can it help my business? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. In basic terms, it’s the process of building strategies to help people find your website on Google, Yahoo, Bing, or another search engine. These search engines have built indexed listings of websites all over the web. Search engines, especially Google, have built a highly intelligent search algorithm that attempts to place the most relevant information at the top of the listings. So now that we know what SEO stands for and the basics of how search engines work, let’s explore some basic SEO strategies you can implement to start ranking your website.

 

SEO Strategy #1: Getting the Foundation Right

If you read my posts, you’ll see a common theme here. Your website foundation is key to success. If a SEO company does not start with looking at your website structure, you should run! After all, we are trying to rank your WEBSITE on the search engines! Make sure that you have an on-page SEO strategy that targets a keyword for each page. There are many factors to on-page SEO, but making sure your content aligns to the target keyword is key. For example, I am writing this post to align to the keyword “SEO strategies”. I have done my research and I have identified this keyword as a potential keyword that my site can be listed highly for Google on. As you can see from my post, my permalink is relevent, my h1 tag includes the keyword, I have variations of the keyword being used (SEO strategy), my content is on topic, my keyword density is correct, I am linking out to other posts. Other factors you can’t see include: My post is robot.txt file is index-able by Google, my metatag and metadesciption are written with the keyword inside and are relevant to this blog post.

Other foundation factors include more complex things such as site speed and code optimization, among others. You should make sure that photos are as small as possible while still retaining quality for a good user experience.

 

SEO Strategy #2a: Building a Strategy that Fits your Business Type

Okay, so you have your foundation built and optimized correctly. The next step is to think about your business type and your goals. Is your business a local business? Are you a national brand? Are you an eCommerce company? Are you trying to generate leads or sales? Maybe a combination of a few of these?

I would approach each one of these business types differently. For example, local businesses should be building a local SEO strategy, along with broad keywords that Google has determined are location sensitive. For example, “internet marketing company” is a broad keyword that Google says is also relevant for local searches. How can you find this out? Simply do broad keyword research and then just search the terms in Google. If these keywords are broad and locally targeting, you’ll see local businesses in your area pop up. This is because Google emphasizes local businesses over large companies locally. Kudos to Google for helping the small businesses!

 

SEO Strategy #2b: Keyword Research

In tandem with the above SEO strategy, keyword research is an important part of SEO. You can use a free tool such as the Google Keyword Planner to find the right keywords for your business. You may be asking, “Which keywords are right for my business?” It really depends. I’ll answer that question for a small business. When starting out, find keywords that have between 100 and 1000 searches per month, are not too competitive, have a low number of search results, and have some advertising value (Cost per Click). Eventually we all want to be ranked for the most competitive, most search keywords! But to start, keep it simple and be realistic. Go for the low to medium hanging fruit.

 

SEO Strategy #3: Creating Linkable Assets

The next step in creating SEO strategies is to create linkable assets. Linkable assets are simply items or pages on your website that people like and want to link to. A blog is one of the most common types of linkable assets. Think about creating value for your target customer. Give them something that helps them, informs them, or inspires them.

 

SEO Strategy #4: Getting Those Links

The last SEO strategy in our basic SEO strategies tutorial is to get links pointed back at your site. Google no longer wants you to just send thousands of links aimlessly back to your site, they value quality and relevancy. Guest blogging can be a great way to get a backlink. There are tons of other strategies to build links, which we won’t get in to in this post. However, We wanted to make sure that when you’re building your SEO strategies, you remember to get quality links back to your site and individual pages.
